Undersea Exhibit Ambiance

CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE STEINHART AQUARIUM / San Francisco, CA

Inside San Francisco’s Steinhart Aquarium, etherial water ripples wash the walls as if visitors were walking beneath the ocean. This light-induced ambience adds to the overall aquatic environment of submersed foliage and swimming sea creatures. Commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences, GPG created special illuminated zones to attract visitors into low traffic areas. The resulting sensations appear to shimmer down from overhead ocean waves.

Based on a GPG installation at the Monterey, CA Clement Intercontinental Hotel, the Steinhart displays each have hand-selected colors to complimentarily blend with adjacent exhibit lighting. Special care was taken to prevent water ripple effect lighting from entering each aquarium since some deep sea creatures are highly sensitive to light.
